2010 SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS
FIFTY-NINE NEW STUDENTS JOIN THE FOUNDATION IN 2010 – Fifty-nine new students from thirty cities around the country were selected from approximately 750 applications to participate in the Foundation’s multi-year work/study program. Our newest students joined the ranks of 180 existing scholars and more than 375 graduates of the program. Students work each summer at broadcast stations, cable systems, cable program networks, public broadcast stations, advertising firms, and other industry organizations. While in the program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full time employment upon completion of their college degrees. Our unique, multi-year program prepares a diverse group of talented young professionals to enter the workforce with specific job-related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment and a strong foundation for future advancement.

SUMMER CONFERENCE 2010 - Students returned to New York City for the Emma Bowen Foundation’s annual conference from June 13-16, 2010. More than 200 students attended this year’s conference. The agenda included a professional development seminar entitled Make It Happen facilitated by Wrisë Booker (left) of Reid Dugger Consulting Group. The session focused on identifying key skill sets for the job you want.

The Annual Awards Luncheon featured guest speaker William J. Abbott (right), President & CEO of Crown Media Holdings/Hallmark Channel. An afternoon panel titled Advertising: The Transformation of an Industry focused on what changes have affected the advertising industry, from an economic, technological, and demographic standpoint, and what career opportunities exist in the advertising industry. The panel moderator was Nancy Hill (left), President & CEO of the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the panel included Dan Burrier, Chief
Innovation Officer, Ogilvy & Mather, North America, Vann Graves, SVP Creative Director, McCann Erickson, Kendra Hatcher King, SVP, Planning, Starcom Mediavest, and David Prince, SVP, Group Director, McCann Erickson.
The graduate panel, a favorite with students, featured Jemaine Buchanan, Exp. Servs. & Sports Research Analyst, Nielsen, Joseph Diaz (left), Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Producer, ABC, Henry Greenidge (left), Legal Intern, FCC Commissioner Baker’s office, Ashley Johnson (left), Reporter, Hearst Television, Dillon Stevenson, TV1 Tech Operator, Time Warner Cable, and Glenn Thompson, Digital Service Rep., Ad Sales, Turner Broadcasting.

Comcast hosted our “corporate day” during the conference. Danielle Fishel (right), Host of “The Dish” on Style Network served as emcee for the day. Dan Goodwin, Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis, highlighted the state of the business and outlook for 2010 and beyond. An interactive panel on the diversity of Comcast’s businesses, expansion and growth in key areas, and the importance of being innovative yet true to your core business followed.
The panel featured Wendy Ahn, VP Network Sales, Comcast Network Sales, Brian Berger, VP, Strategy and Development, Comcast Interactive Media, Ebony Lee, Sr. Director Business Development, Tina Waters, SVP, Human Performance, panel facilitator, and Andrew Ward, VP Integrated Sales, Comcast Spotlight. Ron Phillips, (left) Sr. Vice President, Employee Engagement, spoke about personal branding and his own successful career experiences.
Bret Perkins (left), Sr. Director, Public Policy, spoke about the importance of personal and community investment. The final panel of the day, Ask the Experts-Everything You Ever Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask, featured Barb Cowan (upper right), Director, Talent, Barbara Gee (right), VP Strategic Sales Alliances, Marge Jackson (right), VP Marketing, and Luz Santana (right), Director, Training and Development.
Other conference events included a dinner honoring the Class of 2010 and a party for all participants at the Hard Rock Café in New York’s Times Square.

CAREER FAIR – The Foundation organized its first annual Career Fair on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 after the annual summer conference. Thirty-eight Foundation students from the Class of 2010 met with representatives from ABC, CBS, Comcast, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Discovery, ESPN, FOX, Katz, HBO, Ion Media, NBC, Nielsen, Ogilvy & Mather, Scripps, Time Warner Cable, and Turner Broadcasting. The Career Fair, hosted through the generosity of NBC Universal, has already resulted in several successful full time job placements with more on the horizon. 
CLASS OF 2010 We are pleased to report that many of our seniors have already secured full time positions in the media. Among those that have accepted offers are Lee Sandra Alexandre, Associate Producer for WFTV, Orlando, FL, Candace Barnes, sales associate for FOX, and Laura Bragg, Promotions Producer at WJXT, Jacksonville, FL, her corporate partner. Lauren Burnett was also hired by her corporate partner, ABC, as a media associate in the network's media relations department. Adrienne Cordero was hired by her corporate sponsor, Comcast, as a coordinator in Media Sales for Comcast Spotlight. Arnell Davis is now a Market Resources Analyst at CBS, Desmond Dickerson is working in marketing with NeboWeb, and Wendy Eav, is currently part of the Entertainment marketing group at ABC. Joseph Flowers was hired by WAMU radio station in Washington, DC, Sonie Guseh is an accounting manager at Google, Brian Knox is an Assistant Producer with NBC 5 in Dallas, and Stephanie Jane Martin is now a Multicultural Marketing Specialist with Comcast. Tiffany Lee's corporate sponsor, The Weather Channel, hired her on as a sales associate. Dorea Novaez is currently an associate producer with Undocumented Productions in Houston. Akudo Nwankpa was hired by her corporate partner, Comcast, as a sales assistant. Miranda Pham was hired by her corporate partner, Mediacom Communications, as a Human Resources Recruiting Coordinator. Karina Roa is a media research analyst with Mediamark, and Raquel Rodriguez is a reporter with WRBL in Columbus, GA. James Scott was hired as a production assistant by his corporate sponsor, Fox Television, Aaron Sinclair was hired by WRC, an NBC station, as a Production Assistant in the local news department, and Savannah Squires is an administrative coordinator with Simon & Schuster. Tony Towns was accepted by his corporate partner, ABC, into their Production Associates' Program.
Allison Worrell currently works for PBS' Nightly Business News in Miami. Michael Orr and Jarred Hill were accepted into the NBC Page Program. The Class of 2010 made an unprecedented gift to the Foundation of One Thousand dollars along with plaques of appreciation to each of the Foundation’s three offices and staff.

2010 STUDENTS OF THE YEAR HONORED – Adrienne Cordero and Michael Orr were named the co-recipients of the Emma L. Bowen Foundation’s 2010 Student of the Year Awards at the annual Board of Directors/Student Luncheon held in conjunction with the annual Summer Conference in New York City. The awards recognize the achievements of an outstanding male and female senior and serves as an incentive to other Foundation students to continue to strive for excellence.
Criteria for the award includes: outstanding work quality; noteworthy professional and personal growth and integrity; academic excellence; creativity and initiative; and special contributions to his/her company, college and/or community. Adrienne is a graduate of New York University where she earned a degree in Media, Culture, Education and Human Development. Her corporate sponsor was Comcast in New York City. Adrienne continues to work as a coordinator in Media Sales for Comcast Spotlight. Michael is a graduate of the University of Miami where he earned a degree in Communications, Video, Film and International Studies. His corporate sponsor was Cox Communications. A special thanks to Mickey Dwyer-Dobbin (P&G, ret.), Lynn Heymont of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group and Steve Sommer (ABC, ret.) for serving as our 2010 judges.

SCHOLARS FOR AMERICA - The Foundation presented the Scholars for America Awards for the first time to three recipients at the annual Board of Directors/Student Luncheon held in conjunction with the annual Summer Conference in New York City.
The students selected were chosen for their outstanding community service efforts. Miranda Pham (upper right) of Mediacom was selected for her work with Simpson College Prison Education Initiative, Alex Fonseca (left) of NBC was selected for his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, and Alexandra West (lower right) of Comcast was selected for her work with the Maple Grove Ambassador Scholarship Program. 
FOUNDATION STUDENT RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIP FROM WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS’ ASSOCIATION – Jasmine Norwood (far left in photo) was honored at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) scholarship luncheon and the WHCA dinner in Washington, DC.
The White House Correspondents' Association distributed $132,500 to eighteen journalism students from five prestigious universities. All of the scholarship recipients were invited to a private reception with President and Mrs. Obama. Jasmine is a senior at Howard University and her corporate sponsor in the Emma Bowen Foundation work/study program is WHUT and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
ACADEMIC AWARDS PRESENTED – 29 students were presented with the Foundation’s top academic award for earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher during the 2009-2010 school year. 2010 iLINK MENTORING PROGRAM – For the ninth consecutive year, the Walter Kaitz Foundation funded our iLink Mentoring Program. On July 12-14th, 2010, we conducted a workshop in Atlanta, GA for 25 students and 10 mentors. The iLink Intensive workshop is a 2.5-day professional development session that brings together industry executives with Foundations students to introduce such concepts as diverse work styles (utilizing the DiSC assessment tool), group dynamics, unspoken corporate rules, managing up, leadership when you are not in charge, and the challenges of professionals of color in the workplace. Guided by a professional facilitator, Wrisë Booker of Reid Dugger Consulting Group, mentors work with teams of 3-5 students to answer their questions and concentrate on strategies that build strong careers. This year’s mentors included Mike Bramel of Katz Media, Julian Davis and Joanna Douglas of Arbitron, Michelle Duke of NABEF, Robin Dunson of Cox, Kathryn Kelly of Discovery, Terri Moore (above) of Time Warner Cable, Deborah King of Turner Broadcasting, Roberta Segers of Cox, and Melissa Sykes (above) of Scripps.
Foundation graduates from the Atlanta area participated in a networking event with Link mentees and mentors during the workshop. Included were Je-Anne Jarrett Berry (Turner), Michael Estime (Morris Multimedia), Carolyn Githiyea (Comcast), Marguerita Peralta Eberline (Nielsen), Rokeia Smith Gravley (Fox), Cedric Jones (Turner), Dan Martinez (Gannett), Candice Mitchell (Cox Media), Kyle Leverett (Comcast), and Will Johnson (Cox).
PARENTS’ NIGHTS – The Foundation hosted Parents’ Night events in Washington, DC, New York City, and Chicago this summer. Parents of recently selected Emma Bowen scholars had the opportunity to learn more about the program and students were able to network with both staff and other Foundation scholars. The events were hosted by ABC in New York, C-SPAN in Washington, DC and Comcast in Chicago.
FOUNDATION STUDENTS DONATE TO HAITI RELIEF EFFORT - in response to the call for assistance after the earthquake in Haiti, Foundation students donated $5,500 to the Red Cross’ Haiti Relief Fund. Foundation student, Victoria Fortune (TV-One), volunteered to travel to Haiti in August to help at two orphanages. Victoria collected funds and supplies to assist in her efforts for the children.
EMMA BOWEN FOUNDATION STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD ELECTS NEW REPRESENTATIVES – The Foundation established a Student Advisory Board in 2007 to better serve the students and insure that the programs developed by the Foundation for students remain relevant both in topics and technology. Each class elects two representatives for a two-year term. The 2010-2011 Advisory Board includes:

NEW MEDIA & TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM – In the spring of 2010, the Foundation launched its New Media and Technology program for students interested in pursuing technical careers in the Media. Students recruited for this new program participate in multi-year internships, attend our annual summer conference, and are invited to participate in our Link Mentoring program. ABC, HBO, Cable Labs, CBS and Hearst Television are currently sponsoring new media and technology students in the program. We hope to expand the program with other corporate partners and potential new corporate partners in 2011.

Parker Ethics in Telecommunications 2010 Lecture and Breakfast - Foundation board member, Marcellus Alexander, Executive Vice President for the NAB and President of the NAB Education Foundation was honored with the Donald H. McGannon Award for special contributions in advancing the roles of women and persons of color in the media at this year's event. The Honorable Mignon Clyburn, FCC Commissioner, presented the Parker Lecture. Walter Kaitz Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner - The Walter Kaitz Foundation advocates for diversity by supporting programs that advance multi-ethnic and women professionals in the cable telecommunications industry.
Their annual fundraising dinner raises significant funding for The Emma Bowen Foundation, the National Association of Multi-Ethnicity in Communications and Women in Telecommunications. The dinner held in New York on September 15, 2010 featured recipients of the Kaitz-funded programs and included Emma Bowen student, Victoria Fortune. Victoria attends Howard University and is an intern at TV-One in Silver Spring. The Media Institute Awards Dinner
- The Media Institute is a nonprofit research foundation that is recognized as a leading "think tank" for First Amendment and communications policy issues. Their annual fundraising dinner was held on October 6, 2010 in Washington, DC. Kyle McSlarrow, President & CEO of the NCTA and Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation were the evening's honorees. The Honorable Meredith Attwell Baker, FCC Commission gave the keynote address. Two Emma Bowen Foundation alumni, Henry Greenidge and Monica Clarke, attended the black-tie event with Emma Bowen president, Phylis Eagle-Oldson. Henry recently graduated from the University Of Baltimore School Of Law and worked during the summer of 2010 in Commissioner Baker's office. Monica earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard and is currently attending Georgetown Law School. FOUNDATION STUDENTS MEET WITH THE ALLIANCE FOR WOMEN IN MEDIA -
The Alliance for Women in Media's newly appointed President, Erin Fuller, and Valerie Blackburn, Chair-Elect for the AWM National Board of Directors, met with Emma Bowen students Nick Garcia (Fox) and Ariel Pratt (SiTV) to discuss careers in the media. "The students I have met through our partnership with Emma Bowen have been exceptional. Their enthusiasm about their academic and internship experiences, knowledge about the media industry, their professional areas of interest, and overall poise have made me excited about the future of media," said Fuller.

Emma Bowen Foundation Graduates Gather at 30 Rockefeller Plaza - NBC Universal was the host for a very special evening to celebrate the Emma Bowen Foundation's graduates and students in the New York City area on November 3, 2010. Over 40 graduates and students joined NBC executives (and Foundation board members), John Wallace, President NBC Local Media Division and Michael Jack, President & General Manager of WNBC; along with Debra Langford, Vice President of Inclusion and Business Diversity; Ethan Loney, Vice President of Diversity; Alan Seiffert and Marcus Lee of SyFy Ventures; Devin Johnson of iVillage and several of NBC's Human Resources team, on the 52nd Floor of the NBC Universal headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for a reception and networking event. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by all!

Hearst Television Recognized at IRTS Gold Medal Dinner - Emma Bowen Foundation graduate, Arnell Davis, participated in the awards ceremony at the 2010 IRTS Gold Medal Dinner to recognize the outstanding achievements of Hearst Corporation and the Campbell Soup Company in the area of corporate responsibility.
Arnell, who also served as an IRTS Summer Fellow (International Radio and Television Society), after graduating from college, highlighted Hearst Television's support of the Emma Bowen Foundation and David Barrett's participation as an Emma Bowen Foundation board member for the last six years. The dinner was held on Monday, November 15, 2010 at the Pierre Hotel in New York. Arnell graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. His corporate sponsor was Arbitron. He currently works as a market resource analyst at CBS in New York.
